Understanding Daylight Saving Time (DST) for Providers

This article is intended for:

🧑‍⚕️ Providers

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of adjusting clocks during certain times of the year.

When DST begins, clocks are typically moved forward by one hour. When DST ends, clocks are moved back by one hour.

Not all countries and regions observe DST. However, even if you do not observe DST in your location, you may work with members who do.

The platform automatically handles DST adjustments to help ensure appointments remain accurate throughout the year.

How DST Affects Availability

Your availability follows the timezone configured in your provider profile.

Availability is based on local time rather than a fixed GMT/UTC offset.

Example:

A provider's profile timezone is set to Santiago and their availability is configured from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

  • Before DST starts, Santiago is GMT-4.

  • When DST starts, Santiago becomes GMT-3.

Even though the GMT offset changes, the provider's availability remains 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Santiago time.

The platform automatically applies the correct timezone offset while preserving the configured local hours.

How DST Affects Bookings

When creating or rescheduling a booking, the platform automatically applies the DST rules that are in effect on the session date.

You do not need to manually calculate DST adjustments.

The platform uses the timezone associated with the appointment and applies the correct offset for the scheduled date.

The GMT/UTC offset displayed next to a timezone reflects that timezone's current offset.

However, future appointments are calculated using the timezone rules that apply on the appointment date.

Example:

Suppose it is June and the Bookings tab displays:

Santiago (GMT-4)

A member books a session for 15 September at 9:00 AM Santiago time.

By September, Santiago observes DST and the applicable offset becomes GMT-3.

On the Bookings tab:

  • The timezone selector may display Santiago (GMT-4) because that is the current offset in June.

  • The appointment will correctly appear as 9:00 AM Santiago time.

  • The platform automatically applies the correct GMT-3 offset for the September appointment.

Once DST begins, the timezone selector will update and display Santiago (GMT-3).

The appointment will continue to appear as 9:00 AM Santiago time.

Calendar Invitations and Confirmation Emails

Booking confirmation emails and calendar invitations use the appointment's scheduled timezone and automatically account for DST changes.

Calendar applications typically convert appointments to the viewer's local timezone while applying the correct DST rules.
